Mr. Zardari Should Resign

Mr. Zardari’s lack of vision, corrupt and fedual mindset, absolute focus on political vendetta, and failure to follow democratic principles has brought the country to the verge of a disaster. His blunders of declaring his political rivals ineligible to hold public office and imposing Governor’s rule in Punjab provided a window of instability for the anti-Pakistan forces to commit terrorism in Lahore.

Mr. Zardari has been a complete failure. His own party is ready to disown him. His actions have been an embarrassment to the legacy of prime minister Benazir Bhutto. Because of his flawed actions and murky personality, the image of Pakistan is being tarnished internationally. He has failed to put his money where his mouth is. The untimely death of prime minister Benazir Bhutto gave him an opportunity to unite the country but he blew it up.

For democracy in Pakistan to flourish there needs to be a process of accountability and a system of checks and balances. An independent judiciary is the need of the hour. It is the 21 st century, the era of personality worship is over and the era of democratic institutions has begun. The feudal lords and generals cannot prevent people from demanding and establishing an independent judiciary.

As March 16 approaches, Mr. Zaradri, because of his own actions, is like a blind man riding a blind horse past a deep ditch at midnight. He has placed the country into a very dangerous situation. He should face the music and resign. Would his own party men advise him to step aside and spare the country the unnecessary chaos and violence?
