The Najam Sethi and Salim Bukhari Discussion
By Dr Ghayur Ayub

An interesting TV discussion between Najam Sethi and Salim Bukhari on the Kerry-Lugar Bill ended with Sethi contradicting himself by taking a U-turn. He, initially, criticized the Pak military leaders for readily accepting American aid in the past with harsher clauses and flouting them thus making the country look untrustworthy and morally downgrading Pakistan in the eyes of the US.

Later, after an interesting debate, when the compere of the program asked him what would be his advice to the government on the Bill he said to accept it with the restrictions and, if needed, keep flouting the Bill’s clauses and when caught in the process hope the American Executive might ignore or take whatever action they deem necessary.

As opposed to his flip-flop approach, Bukhari took a firm stand reflecting the stand taken by the vast majority of Pakistan public duly linking morals and dignity with financial aid.
