Ramadan & Increased Risk of Divine Punishment

People are bewildered that social evils such as hoarding and profiteering thrive even during the holy month of Ramadan. This reminds me of the time when Martial Law was imposed in 1958. Very severe punishments were being imposed for bribery etc. A Govt. contractor went to an official to receive his payment. He was wishfully thinking that he would not have to pay the usual compulsory bribe because of the Martial Law. He was, however, shocked to discover that a higher than usual amount was being demanded. When he questioned the rise he was told that the reason for higher cost was the ‘ added risk factor’ of punishments under Martial Law. The system was working like an insurance business, where you pay a higher premium for greater risks.

This may explain why Ramadan brings an increase in prices. The hoarder, the smuggler, and the profiteer have to take into account the increased risk of divine punishment!
