Ramadan Prices

A few days ago, I visited TESCO stores in London. It was very pleasant to notice Ramadan Mubarik posters displayed in the store. There was a selection of special Asian food items available at reduced prices. Price of Basmati rice was drastically reduced: If one buys a pack of Laila Basmati rice, one extra pack is given free. This means 50% reduction in price. When they say “Ramadan Mubarik”, it really means “Mubarik”. When will it be possible for the poor in Pakistan to have a “truly Mubarik” Ramadan?

People are bewildered that social evils such as hoarding and profiteering thrive even during Ramadan. This reminds me of the time when Martial Law was imposed in 1958. Very severe punishments were being imposed for bribery, etc. A government contractor went to an official to receive his payment. He was wishfully thinking that he would not have to pay the usual compulsory bribe because of the Martial Law. He was, however, horrified to discover that a higher than usual amount was being demanded. When he questioned, he was told that the reason for higher cost was the ‘added risk factor’ of punishments under Martial Law. The system was working like an insurance business, where you pay a higher premium for greater risks.

This may explain why Ramadan brings enhanced level of prices. The hoarder, the smuggler and the profiteer have to take into account the increased risk of divine punishment.
