Caretaker PM
By Col. Riaz Jafri (Retd)

What apparently looks to be the concern of almost all political parties is that the caretaker Prime Minister should be someone who would not be a partisan in the coming elections and yet they all want to have a person of their own choice for the slot!

Would the person so chosen be a robot and devoid of all human feelings and sensitivities or have no likings and dislikings, weaknesses or penchant whatsoever for his ‘benefactors’ who had selected him for the highest executive position in the country?  Anyway, I am not much concerned about his being partial or impartial – that is for the Election Commission of Pakistan to take care of. All I want is that my ‘caretaker’ should be able to ‘take care’ of me and for that he must be a very capable administrator to steer the country out of the morass that the present rulers have pushed it into.

He must not just act as a simple ‘caretaker’ to while away his time and enjoy the perks and privileges including a couple of Umeras and jaunts abroad but should take care of me and the many ills that I suffer from. Most important of all is to ensure the safety and security of my life and property. Thereafter, at least two square meals a day for me and my family which can only come if I have the means to buy them. That calls for a job for me which can only come from better economy.

Industry is the main stay of the economy but it needs electricity and gas, better transportation for finished goods and raw materials and healthy labor to run it. Agreed the caretaker may not have enough time for it all but he can , hopefully, at least set the pace for the sadiq and ameen elected democrats to follow suit.
