Hats off to Pakistan's Judiciary

Hats off to Pakistan's independent judiciary for the grant of bail to General Pervez Musharraf. It was an act of courage to decide the case on merit because they were an aggrieved party.

Senior Police officers who had grilled Pervez Musharraf regarding his role in the Lal Masjid case found him innocent. This is praiseworthy considering the known position of the higher judiciary and the ruling junta.

Pervez Musharraf has been set free by the court because the charges have not been proved against him. The Supreme Court had allowed bail to him in other cases. He remains on the Exit Control List and cannot travel abroad without the court's permission.

The administration did its best to ensure that Musharraf is not released on bail. They charged him with multiple violations and timed it to bail. In reply to a question by Kamran Khan of Geo, Mansur Ali Khan, a respected former Attorney General of Pakistan, stated that it smacks of malice and vendetta.

Pakistan's Constitution does not allow anyone to be kept in captivity for six months without a probable cause. Musharraf has all along categorically denied the charges and attributed them to fabrication and falsehood.

I rejoice at the independence of the judiciary and the police. After the elections, Pakistan has received a new shot of freedom. May the flame of freedom continue to burn and dispel the darkness that has enveloped Pakistan lately. Ameen.
