Calling the Faithful to Obamacare

“Of all the forms of inequality, injustice in health care is the most shocking and inhumane.” - Martin Luther King Jr.

For over ten years now, we have been saying at Compassionate Care Network (CCN), that next to the gift of faith that gives our lives meaning and purpose, is the gift of health which enables us to fulfill our obligations in life, to our families and community.

We have argued without reservation, that access to affordable health care should be a right not a privilege in any civil society. For when this right is denied then neither the pursuit of happiness is possible, nor is it possible to preserve peace and prosperity in society.

So when the Affordable Care Act became law four years ago, we knew America had finally got it right and health care justice was finally served.

As we approach the final few days of open enrollment into this nationwide health care program, more commonly known as Obamacare, we appeal to the leaders of all faith communities, and particularly our own, to speak to the members of their congregations, on the numerous benefits to be secured through joining this program.

We believe there are not many voices that have the persuasive power of a khateeb's words or the preacher's speech in our faith communities. When they speak people listen. We also believe that the issues of physical health and well-being are no less important than the issues of spiritual knowledge and education. With two Fridays left before the close of Obamacare enrollments (on March 31), we hope they will take the time to say a few words, either during or after their khutbas, to encourage enrollments.

Here are the bare bone benefits to know, that are guaranteed through Obamacare:

* Coverage for hospital care, doctor visits, X-rays, labs and prescriptions.

* Coverage for pre-existing conditions, mental health and preventative care.

* Coverage on treatments without limits of financial caps.

* Premium discounts for low wage earners.

* Of course enrollment is required by law now for those who are US citizens and green card holders, with financial penalties to pay for non-compliance.

It is this simple to pitch. For making it more easy for the uninsured, there are trained navigators to assist them at many mosques during these last two weekends.

May Allah inspire our khateebs and leaders to use the power of their speech to promote reflection and provide good guidance to our community.
