If I Were Imran
By Col. Riaz Jafri (Retd)

Imran Khan has not yet taken over but a subtle scheme of intrigues and slander has already started against him by his opponents to ensure that he does not succeed. Part of the malicious scheme is to create doubts about his capabilities in the mind of innocent Pakistanis by some of the paid TV anchors who are aided by the Noonie, Jiala and Mullah panelists in this drive. They impishly ask how would Imran change Pakistan into a Madina State. How would he do away with terrorists within 90 days? How and where will he produce jobs for the jobless millions? How would he fight the menace of rampant corruption in the country?
I am sure Imran knows best what to do.
But, if I were him, I shall caution all government, semi-government, autonomous and semi-autonomous governing bodies and agencies dealing with the public to henceforth be absolutely honest in their dealings and work. In any office, the immediate superior shall be held equally responsible for the dishonesty and misdeeds of his subordinates and would be tried for the offence committed by his subordinate. This means that if a clerk is caught on corruption charges his Superintendent would also be charged for the offence. If a Patwari is caught, the Qanoongo, the Naib Tehsildar and the Tehsildar himself would also be held responsible for the offence. It would be a “To catch a thief set a thief” and “Nip the evil in the bud” strategy. Everyone knows well about one’s colleagues and immediate superiors and juniors in an organization. This will demolish the culture of “vertical alignment” of corruption in our offices where the booty travels upwards, at times to the highest officer.
There are a few revolutionary solutions to other evil problems, but I will deal with them one at time. I intend writing about them in the series, “If I were Imran”.
