Pressing Need for a Vibrant Media

I enjoyed reading the Editor’s article “Pressing need for a vibrant media” in the April 19 issue of Pakistan Link. He convincingly points out the importance of the media in today’s world. The article reminded me of the following three media-related pieces:
1. The Economist’s Article in the March 30 issue on “King Bibi”. “When he (Bibi) lost power in 1999, he blamed reporters for downplaying his accomplishments and accentuating his failures. He cried out, ‘I want my own media.’”. Sheldon Adelson, an American Casino Mogul and one of the largest donors of the Republican party, obliged him by “funding Israel Hayom, which is now Israel’s most popular paper. It’s coverage of the prime minister is reliably glowing.” It has been compared to “Pravda” by Israel’s former defense minister.
2. The recent movie on former US Vice President Dick Cheney. There is a scene which shows Cheney realizing the importance of Fox News to the success of the Republican party.
3. The movie “Gandhi”. Arguably our founding father, Muhammad Ali Jinnah, was a better leader and a statesman than Gandhi, according to Stanley Wolpert, yet our children in America read and watch movies on Gandhi, in which Jinnah is portrayed as a cold, distant, and arrogant aristocrat.
I appreciate you for keeping “Pakistan Link” going. It’s an oasis in the harsh desert of the media landscape!
