Los Angeles: At a fundraiser
dinner held on December 9th by the Council of Pakistan American
Chamber of Commerce (CPACC) with the collaboration of other
community members, close to $120K was raised in cash, pledges
and pledges to build shelter homes for the survivors of
the October 8 earthquake.
The largest cash donation was made by a non-Pakistani, Dr.
Mateen Ahmed, who is a renowned eye specialist and of Indian
origin. CPACC was the host for popular Pakistani singer
Jawad Ahmed who is not only a singing icon of Pakistan but
a great human being, stated Mrs Fatima Khan, who was the
emcee of the program and one of the main forces behind organizing
the event along with CPACC president Mr. Arif Mansuri and
Chairman Waqar Ali Khan.
Jawad has taken upon himself the task of building homes
for the quake victims and for this reason he put aside and
cancelled all his concerts and has been touring N. America
since October 8th to raise funds for the rehabilitation
of the quake survivors. Because of several fundraisers held
around the nation and in Los Angeles since the earthquake,
many were experiencing donor fatigue; yet, the fundraiser
was a great success, stated Mr. Waqar Ali Khan. Despite
the short notice, the event was attended by over 300 prominent
community member,s including Noor M. Jadmani, Consul General
of Pakistan in LA.
During the fundraiser, pledges were made for over 200 shelter
homes. CPACC had been in the forefront since the earthquake
struck and has been promoting awareness among Pakistani,
non Pakistani, and mainstream American communities to support
the victims of the quake.
The Executive Members of CPACC , namely Mr. M. Waheed and
Atta Tareen, have been very dedicated in helping with relief
efforts by raising funds, sending out containers of relief
goods, including tents and medicine. CPACC acknowledges
Mr. Hamid Malik, president and Tanveer Khan of COPAA for
sending out emails about the event and Mrs. Perveen Imdad
and Dr. Imdad for bringing several members from Inland Empire
and Upland and Asif Syed from Orange County who donated
generously. CPACC encourages and urges members of the community
to continue to donate generously and supports the victims
of the quake for as long as it is needed.
