Muslim Wins in Republican
Primary for Township Trustee
Illinois: Moin Moon Khan, a
journalist, a community activist, and a motivational speaker,
made history in Illinois and perhaps in the nation, by winning
in the Republican Primary for York Township Trustee. Republicans
of York Township, who never elected a person of color to represent
them on the township board, broke away from their tradition
and made history by electing Khan, who has been recently appointed
as Asian American liaison for the Republican Party of DuPage
County by State Senator Kirk Dillard. Appreciating Khan’s
deep commitment to local issues and politics, a large number
of local Muslim voters also participated in the recently held
primary.
The general election will be held On April 5, 2005 (Tuesday)
when citizens will be able to vote at the neighborhood polling
stations. Those who cannot go out to vote on that day for
some legal reasons can vote through absentee ballot, which
can be arranged by calling the DuPage County Election Commission
at (630) 682-7440. For Absentee Ballots, calls should be made
in the second week of March. York Township consists of the
major parts of Elmhurst, Lombard, Oak Brook, Oakbrook Terrace,
Villa Park, and a few sections of Downers Grove, Glen Ellyn,
Hinsdale, and Westmont.
The other outstanding community activists who got elected
along with Khan and will be running with him on the same panel
are John Valle for Supervisor, Paul Hinds, Tony Cuzzone, and
Barb Finn for Trustees, Kary Grane for Clerk, Deanna Wilkins
for Assessor, and Dick Schroeder for Highway Commissioner.
"My election will provide political voice to one-fourth of
the residents of York Township, who speak about two dozen
languages and practice a dozen religions, yet they are not
represented," said Khan. "We are the new face of the 21st
century America and we can make it known by working together
and making new pragmatic alliances."
Working as a computer network administrator, Khan's second
job has been volunteerism. During his 12-year stay in the
Chicagoland area, Khan has served on the board of directors
of more than two dozen organizations that include the Asian
American Institute (Director), Illinois Ethnic Coalition (Board
Member), Asian American Journalists Association (Vice President),
Bihar Cultural Association (Founding President), DuPage Chapters
of American Cancer Society and United Way (Director), Federation
of Indian Associations (Secretary, Vice President, President-Elect),
Toastmasters International's Cook County Chapter (Vice President,
Area Governor), Council of Islamic Organization's Media Relations
Committee (Secretary), Asian American Coalition's Media Relations
Committee 1994 (Chairman), National Federation of Indian Association's
8th Biennial 1994 Convention (Publicity Committee Chairperson),
Islamic Society of North America’s 1997 National Convention
s Media Relations Committee (chairperson), Village of Bloomingdale's
Fourth of July Commission (Commissioner), DuPage County Republican
Organization (Asian American Liaison) and elected Committeeman
of the York Township of the Republican Organizations. For
