A
special ribbon-cutting ceremony took place to open the new
building of the Al-Huda Islamic School on Saturday May 7
2005. Hawthorne city Mayor Larry Guidi, Shaikh Safwat Mursi,
and the President of the Board of Education Dr. Sayed Sallam
initiated the ceremony by cutting the ribbon. Br. Ahmad
Azam moderated the event and the president Dr. Jawdat Dajani
and Br. Idris Traina welcomed the guests.
About 500 adults and children gathered outside the building
to observe and participate in this blessed event. The entrance
of the building was decorated with beautiful flowers, ribbons,
and balloons. Large tables with 11 ethnic appetizers were
placed in the lobby. The entire school staff waited inside
the building to welcome the honored guests. There were a
number of camera men, TV reporters, and video tapers clicking
at the site of the celebrations.
Al-Huda School principal, Sister Faiza Ali, gave a guided
tour of the eight classrooms. Each class was decorated with
a relevant theme, e.g. the third grade had “Native
Americans”, while the 7th grade displayed artifacts
and costumes of Japanese culture. The students anxiously
waited to explain their work and their theme. The police,
fire, and the city officials were enjoying the various sights
and sounds of this multi-ethnic school community.
The guided tour was completed with the cake-cutting and
the delicious taste of 11 different ethnic refreshments.
All the guests were presented with a folder with relevant
information. This was followed by children’s presentations
and a fund-raiser - the community showed its generosity
by making many pledges. We appreciate all donations and
our doors are open for you.
The school is located at 12227 Hawthorne Way, Hawthorne,
CA 90250. (310) 973-0500. Enrollment is open for new students
and new teachers are being hired.
