Community Enjoys Karachi Club’s Haleem

Los Angeles: It was a sunny Sunday afternoon after a bleak and an unusually dreary spell of heavy rains in Southern California. The canopy in the Garden Grove Park in the City of Garden Grove California was overflowing with a large number of Pakistani Americans attired in resplendent national dresses who had turned up to enjoy tasty haleem.
The occasion was the annual haleem offering arranged by Karachi Club. In the last seven years, the Club has played host to the community to commemorate the supreme sacrifice of Hazrat Imam Husain (PBUH). The Prophet’s grandson gave his life but did not compromise on principles, thus setting an inspirational example for generations to come.

Glimpses of the Haleem Party organized by the Karachi Club

Founded in 1998 by Mr. Babar Khan Ghauri, currently Federal Minister, Karachi Club adequately serves as a platform for Pakistani Americans to come together and celebrate religious and non-religious festivities. Mr. Ghauri had the support of a group of individuals who were both zestful and keen to play their role in the realization of this goal. They included popular community figures like Kamal Zafar, Pervaiz Khan, Agha Arif Abbas, Sameen Faruqi, Nasrat Siddiqi, Adnan Naqvi, Mobeen Baig, Ishtiaq Hasan, Iqbal Bhai, Asif Faruqi, Masood Khan, Attya and Shafiq Niazi, Syed Ahsan, Mohammad Latif, Saba and Zufiqar Engineer, Khalid Hasan.
The Club has organized several functions over the years but the haleem party in the month of Muharram is the most popular event that is eagerly awaited throughout the year. The delicious dish is served in the best Pakistani traditions to the delight of the community members.
The event last week was attended by thousands of people from all walks of life. There were several prominent persons who graced the occasion, including the soft-spoken and unassuming Mr. Noor Mohammad Jadmani, who freely mixes with the crowd and is liked by one and all. The dedicated team of the Karachi Club headed by Kamal Zafar appeared visibly concerned that community members were served haleem with due propriety. Pervaiz Khan and Arif Abbas were duly lauded for their culinary skills in preparing the delicious haleem.
The Club organizers were quick to explain that Minister Babar Khan Ghauri and Dr. Aamir Liaqat Hussain were expected to grace the occasion but had a few pressing assignments to attend to and regretfully could not dash to Los Angeles in time. Their absence caused all round dismay.
The Karachi Club needs to be lauded for the painstaking efforts of its members to make the haleem event a memorable occasion every year.
