Obesity Conference on
April 13 at Fullerton
What: Cal State Fullerton’s
Center for the Promotion of Healthy Lifestyles and Obesity
Prevention will present a community forum on “Obesity:
Awareness and Beyond.”
When: April 13
1-3:30 p.m.
Where: Kinesiology and Health Science Building
Why: “A dramatic increase in childhood obesity over
the past decade has made this an urgent public health concern,”
said Shari G. McMahan, director of the CSUF Center for the
Promotion of Healthy Lifestyles and Obesity Prevention and
professor of health science. “The goal of this conference
is to provide current examples from community interventions
and collaborations on obesity and to discuss future directions.”

Speakers: Cal State Fullerton President Milton A. Gordon;
Shari McMahan, director of the CSUF Center for the Promotion
of Healthy Lifestyles and Obesity Prevention; Roberta Rikli,
dean of the CSUF College of Health and Human Development;
Rep. Loretta Sanchez (D-Garden Grove); and Teresa Samaniego,
public affairs director for KABC-TV.
1:30-3:30 p.m. Panel Discussion
Speakers: Dolores Barrett, director of Community Action
Partnership of Orange County; America Bracho, executive
director of Latino Health Access; Christopher E. Corliss,
coordinator of health, fitness and physical education for
the Orange County Department of Education; Santa Ana Councilman
Mike Garcia; Kenny Rogers, executive director of the California
Governor’s Council on Physical Fitness and Sports;
Barbara Shipnuck, director of public affairs for Kaiser
Permanente, Orange County and team coach for YMCA Activate
America; and Kristen Thompson, director of community development
for YMCA Orange County. The moderator will be Jeannie Kim-Han,
director for the CSUF Center for Internships and Service
Learning.
