ICON Wins “Excellence
in Architectural Design 2005” Award

ICON, a subsidiary of
Art & Technologies Inc. USA, has won the “Award
for Excellence in Architectural Design 2005”, which
is Pakistan's most prestigious Architectural Award. A ceremony
hosted by the Institute of Architects (IAP) Pakistan marked
the conclusion of IAPEX 2005 Conference and exhibition held
in Karachi.
The Institute of Architects (IAP) Pakistan was founded in
1956 and is celebrating its golden jubilee this year. The
Conference and exhibition was attended by several international
delegates including delegates from USA, Thailand, Jordan,
Turkey and Egypt.
Art & Technologies Inc. is a California-based consulting
firm. Its architectural wing “ICON” is managed
by MIT alumni architects Hanif Daud and Saman Mahmood. Architect
Hanif Daud of ICON received the award in the category of architectural
interiors for the project of Mr. Hameed Haroon’s Library
(owner and publisher of DAWN, Pakistan's most widely circulated
English language newspaper).
Architect Hanif Daud AIA, AIAP is a graduate of Dawood College
of Engineering and Technology/NED University, and a Fellow
of Department of Urban Studies and Planning at MIT. Hanif
has been a faculty member at Dawood College of Engineering
and Technology/NED University since 1991. His other recent
notable work is Lahore's Gawalmandi Food Street. This project
was the topic of a presentation at Modern Asian Architecture
Network’s 4th International Conference “Safeguarding
and Revitalizing Local Heritage” held at Tongji University,
Shanghai, China from October 28-30, 2004. Urban Bus Stands
for Karachi was another national award wining project. Recently
Hanif’s work has been profiled on CNBC Pakistan and
other trade publications.
Architect Saman Mahmood AIAP is Graduate of Indus Valley School
of Art and Architecture and MIT. Saman has traveled extensively
throughout Europe, Asia and Africa. Her research work at MIT
was cited in World Bank development report 1999/2000. During
her undergraduate studies in Pakistan Saman was awarded Salimuzzaman
Siddiqui Award and Mehdi Ali Mirza Award for her thesis and
research work. She is also the Nominator of Architecture &
Planning Projects for the Aga Khan Award for Architecture.
She is also a visiting faculty member at Indus Valley School
of Art and Architecture
The other significant work by ICON includes Master Planning
and Development Guidelines for Karachi Zoo, private residences
and interiors in US and Pakistan, several multinational institutions,
radio stations, restaurants such as Karachi's BBQ Tonight,
a Pakistani themed Restaurant in Moscow, Russia, and restoration
of the famous colonial building the Killarney Hotel and historical
Memon Masjid. Among notable exhibition designs was Mohatta
Palace Exposition on Karachi entitled “Jewel in the
Crown”.
