New York: Actress Angelina Jolie
will play the widow of American journalist Daniel Pearl in
a new film directed by English filmmaker Michael Winterbottom,
Daily Variety reported Thursday.
‘A Mighty Heart’ will begin shooting within the
next five weeks, the paper said. The film is adapted from
Mariane Pearl’s own memoir. She was pregnant when her
husband, who worked for The Wall Street Journal, was kidnapped
in Karachi in 2002 and endured a desperate few months before
his body was found, according to the report.
“I am delighted that Angelina Jolie will be playing
my role in the adaptation of my book,” Daily Variety
quoted Mrs Pearl as saying.
“I deeply admire her work and what she is committed
to. I am also happy that Michael Winterbottom, a versatile
and talented director who genuinely loves truth, will be working
on this project as well.” Jolie’s companion, actor
Brad Pitt, will serve as a producer of the project, which
is set up at Paramount Vantage, the art-house arm of Viacom
Inc.’s Paramount Pictures.
A Mighty Heart will be the first major film project for Jolie,
31, following the birth of daughter Shiloh in May. Jolie is
also the goodwill ambassador of the United Nations High Commissioner
for Refugees and has visited Pakistan in that capacity.
Meanwhile another report had it that when Mariane Pearl completed
her book, “A Mighty Heart: The Brave Life and Death
of My Husband Danny Pearl” in late 2003, Warner Brothers
reportedly paid more than $500,000 for the film rights.
The Plan B production company was to make the film, under
the direction of owners Pitt and Aniston, who at the time
were a couple, and Aniston was to play Mariane Pearl.
Soon thereafter, however, Aniston and Pitt severed their marital
and professional relationships. Pitt then entered into a relationship
with Jolie, who now is to play the role of Pearl’s wife.
