A Renaissance Girl amongst
Us!
From
being a semi-finalist at the prestigious Siemens Westinghouse
national science contest to participating in the State and
National Archery Tournament to scoring a 5 in AP European
History and the highest score in the American Math Competition
contest in her school, to getting a cum laude in the Latin
contest, Shelina Kurwa has done it all.
A straight ‘A’ 16 year old 10th grader at Westridge
School for Girls in Pasadena, California, a greatly sought
after private school, Shelina started and heads the school’s
Renaissance Club and also co-heads the FBLA (Future Business
Leaders of America) club. Last year she won first prize at
a TV series writing contest held by a British company Merlyn’s
Pen. A pilot is being produced and if successful, a full-fledged
TV series about South Indian elephants facing extinction will
be produced. BBC has taken an interest in her series.
Over the last year Shelina implemented a unique project “Eye
for an Eye”. She approached patients undergoing cataract
surgery at the Kurwa Eye Center and asked them to donate $50
to allow cataract surgery for a fellow human being at the
Al Shifa Charity Eye Hospital in Islamabad Pakistan. She raised
a total of $750 which she handed to a grateful General Jahandad,
President of the Al Shifa Eye Hospital, at a recent fund raiser
in Los Angeles.
Web design for charitable causes is another hobby of hers
and she has been approached by several charities for assistance.
Shelina’s motto is to be the best you can be, aim for
excellence, build a strong base of academic excellence, leadership
and volunteer service and the best colleges will come looking
for you.
At a recent practice PSAT she scored 224 (out of a maximum
of 240) 217 being the requirement for national recognition.
She hopes to win a National Merit Award and head for Harvard
University.
Students interested in seeking her advice or assistance are
welcome to contact her at skurwa1@gmail.com.
