YWCA Award for CAIR-LA
President
Pasadena,
CA: The Southern California chapter of the Council on American-Islamic
Relations (CAIR-LA) announced March 23 that the YWCA of
the Pasadena-Foothill Valley area will be presenting Tahra
Goraya, president of the executive committee for CAIR-LA,
with the YWCA Women of Excellence Award in the area of Community
Service as part of their annual Women of Excellence Award
Luncheon.
Goraya, Day One executive director for the past five years,
will be one of ten distinguished women in private enterprise,
education, government, arts and communication to receive
the distinction for her contributions to the community.
Goraya oversees the operation of the 18-year-old Pasadena-based
organization, which strives to reduce and prevent harm associated
with alcohol, tobacco and other drugs among youth and families
and the neighborhoods throughout San Gabriel Valley. Under
her leadership, Day One’s collaboration has become
regionally and nationally recognized for its depth, breadth
and comprehensive approaches for improving the quality of
life for its constituents.
In addition to her involvement with Day One, Goraya is active
in a number of social justice issues, civil right advocacy,
and women’s health issues.
"CAIR-LA is extremely proud of Tahra Goraya's recent
and significant successes in improving the health, well-being
and lives of the youth in our community by putting into
action her innovative programs and ideas," said Fouad
Khatib, chairman of CAIR-California. "She is a shining
example of American Muslims' contributions to the betterment
of our society and neighborhoods."
