President Using Bad
Language: Mowahid
Washington,
DC: The recent speeches of US President George Bush, to
mark the 5th anniversary of the 9/11 tragedy, are replete
with offensive terminology towards Muslims.
This was stated by Mowahid Hussain Shah, Special Assistant
to the Chief Minister, Punjab, while addressing a large
gathering of area Muslims and a section of civil society
in the Washington, DC area.
Mowahid said that the use of the term “Islamic fascists”
by President Bush is offending many Muslims who feel it
is uncalled for, especially so, during a time when there
is a need to find common ground for decency and mutual respect.
Mowahid said that fascism is an exclusively European phenomenon
which had nothing to do with Islam’s universal message
of justice, compassion, and human dignity. It was the European
Jewish community that was shattered by European extremism
during the first half of the 20th Century, he added.
To merge, therefore, Islam with fascism shows ignorant bigotry
and is tantamount to hate speech, said Mowahid.
Mowahid urged the Muslim youth to remain vigilant and informed
and to respond to the challenge by making their presence
felt in American society through joining in large numbers
the policy-making professions of media, law, and academia.
