Zafar Abbas Grieved
Peshawar: A top leader
of the Pakistan People's Party NWFP and former provincial
minister Syed Qamar Abbas was gunned down along with his
relative in Hashtnagri late Sunday night. He was the brother
of Syed Zafar Abbas, Urdu Times Los Angeles Bureau Chief.
Syed Qamar Abbas and his close relative Mohammad Ali and
son of the top leader of Tehrik-e-Jafria Anwar Ali Akhunzada,
were on their way home on a motorbike when unidentified
miscreants sprayed bullets on the two near the Hashtnagri
railway crossing at around 10.25 pm.
"The attackers used pistols to fire at the two riders
of the motorbike," Capital City Police Officer Abdul
Majeed Marwat told The News at the site of the incident.
Both, Abbas and Ali, received scores of bullets on their
bodies. Abbas was rushed to hospital in a critical condition
but expired on the way. Qamar Abbas had served the province
as minister for prisons. He had also remained secretary
general as well as senior vice president of the Pakistan
People's Party NWFP Chapter. He was considered a close aide
of Benazir Bhutto in NWFP. He was also a staunch leader
of the Shia sect.
Qamar Abbas had sustained bullet injuries in the 1997 general
elections in a clash with supporters of his rival candidate,
Haji Ghulam Ahmad Bilour.
The news of the death of Syed Qamar Abbas and his nephew
shocked members of the Pakistani-American community in Los
Angeles. In a message announcing the tragic death of Mr
Zafar Abbas’ brother, the Urdu Writers Society, LA,said:
“Hum Zafar Abaas kay gham maiN beraber kay shareek
haiN. Khuda Merhoomeen ko Jannat-ul-firdoas maiN jaga ata
fermaaey.” Pakistan Link shares the loss of the bereaved
family. May Allah grant Mr Zafar Abbas and his family members
the courage and fortitude to bear the loss. May the departed
