Congressman Sarbanes
Joins Pakistan Caucus
John
P. Sarbanes has become the first freshman Congressman to join
the Congressional Pakistan Caucus. Congressman Sarbanes was
first elected to the United States House of Representatives
from the 3rd Congressional District of Maryland on November
7, 2006 and was sworn in on January 4, 2007. The 3rd Congressional
District of Maryland includes portions of Anne Arundel County,
Baltimore City, Baltimore County and Howard County. His Committee
assignments for the 110th Congress are the Education and Workforce
Committee, the Resources Committee and the Government Oversight
Committee.
“Pakistan plays a critical role in the international
arena, including being a strong ally to America,” said
Congressman Sarbanes. “Likewise, Maryland is home to
many Pakistani Americans who make countless and invaluable
contributions to our society. I look forward to participating
in this caucus and to an on-going friendship with the Pakistani
American community.”
The caucus focuses primarily on US-Pakistan relations and
facilitating a relationship between Pakistani Americans and
their representatives in government.
Throughout his life, Congressman Sarbanes has fought to improve
the lives of working people in Maryland and the Mid-Atlantic
region. On issues like consumer protection, decent public
housing and fair treatment in the workplace, John has championed
the efforts of the Public Justice Center and other public
interest organizations that serve Maryland’s families.
For sixteen years, and six as chair, John served on the Health
Care Practice at Venable, one of the nation's leading law
firms, where he represented non-profit hospitals and senior
living providers in their mission to deliver high quality
care to the people of Maryland.
For nearly twenty years, Congressman Sarbanes has worked to
improve public education. Most recently, he completed a seven-year
tenure as special assistant to the State Superintendent of
Schools, serving as liaison to the Baltimore City Public Schools
under the City-State Partnership. John believes that our greatest
natural resource is the talent and energy of the next generation.
The Pakistani American Leadership Center (PAL-C) welcomes
Congressman Sarbanes to the Congressional Pakistan Caucus
and is honored to work with him in the future on building
awareness on Capitol Hill about Pakistani American concerns.
Mossadaq Chughtai, a Founding Director of PAL-C, has repeatedly
met with the Congressman and his Communications Director Ms.
Pia Carusone to discuss Caucus membership.
Mr. Chughtai remarked, “We are proud to have someone
like John Sarbanes on the Pakistan Caucus. He is a sincere
friend of the Pakistani-American community and is a pioneer
on issues of immigration and civil liberties.”
