Dr. Shahid Athar Wins “2009 Distinguished Physician” Award
St. Vincent Hospital and Health Care System (www.StVincent.org) has named Dr. Shahid Athar as “2009 Distinguished Physician”.
The award will be given during the Annual Physician Dinner on February 21, 2009 at the Indiana Roof Ballroom. St. Vincent Hospital is the largest not- for- profit health care in the state of Indiana, and part of Ascention Health. St. Vincent Health has 18 hospitals, 1659 beds and 1650 physicians on staff. Annually it has 66,000 patient admissions, 201,000 ER visits, and 1.9 million outpatient visits .
Dr. Athar received his medical degree from the University of Karachi, Pakistan. He did medical internship and residency at Cook County Hospital in Chicago and Endocrinology research and fellowship at Indiana University School of Medicine, where he helped develop an assay for AVP Antidiuretic Hormone with Professor Gary Robertson. He came to St. Vincent Hospital in 1974 as chief of Endocrinology section, a position he held for 20 years. He also started Endocrinology private practice and since then has taken care of over 30,000 patients.
As a Clinical Associate Professor at Indiana University School of Medicine, he has been active in medical teaching and has touched the lives of hundreds of medical students and residents. In 1978, he became a naturalized US citizen. In 1997, he became a Fellow of American College of Physicians and Fellow of American College of Endocrinology. He has been the recipient of many awards, including AMA Physician Recognition Award for 9 years, Governor Otis Bowen Community Service Award from Indianapolis Medical Society in 2002, St. Vincent Hospital Distinguished Services Award for medical teaching in 2001 and 2008 and Laureate Award from American College of Physicians (Indiana Chapter) in 2007.
