Glimpses of the fundraiser
Hundreds attended Islamic Relief’s fundraising banquet for Pakistan’s relief and development efforts. The event took place on May 09, 2009 at the LAX Radisson in Los Angeles, CA.
The stars of the evening and committed friends of Islamic Relief were Moin Khan and Harris Khan. Moin Khan is a former captain of the Pakistan national cricket team and was a prominent member of the 1992 World Cup victorious team. He is regarded by many as one of the best Pakistani wicketkeepers in history.
Off the pitch, Khan is a dedicated humanitarian. After the Pakistan earthquake in October 2005, he toured the US and fundraised for a health center which was built by Islamic Relief.
Harris Khan, also dedicated to the cause of Islamic Relief’s work in Pakistan, is a first class cricketer and coach of the Pakistan cricket team.
In his address to the audience, Moin Khan said, “It gives me great pleasure to be standing here in-front of you again. With your help the last time I was here, we were able to raise sufficient funds to build a health care center in the remote mountains of Kashmir that caters to the needs of over 40,000 people. Thanks you.”
“The needs of our country Pakistan are great. But I know with your help, Islamic Relief will be able to help many just like they have done in Kashmir, NWFP (North West Frontier Province), and Baluchistan.”
Anwar Khan, Vice President of Fundraising for Islamic Relief thanked the audience for their ardent support of Islamic Relief’s endeavors in Pakistan. But he also stressed the need for doing a lot more. There are more children in Pakistan who need to go to schools, more women that need to have access to healthcare, and more families that can rely on clean drinking water.
Amongst all the honorable guests that graced the evening were members of the Council of Pakistan American Affairs (COPAa), Southern California Cricket Association (SCCA), Netsol, the Jafri family, Adaya family, Siddiqui family, and many more.
Islamic Relief began working in Pakistan in 1992.
- It has succeeded by providing essential emergency aid and long-term development services.
- It was one of the first organizations to respond immediately to the October 2005 earthquake by providing emergency relief.
- Donors in the US raised over $20 million in aid for the earthquake victims.
- Provided over $1 million in aid for over 90,000 victims of the devastating June 2007 cyclone that hit Baluchistan.
