Muslim Community Center of San Diego
It's exciting times for the Muslim community of San Diego, home to tens of thousands of Muslim families. This is because they just broke ground for the construction of their new Muslim Community Center (MCC), says a message received by Pakistan Link. It adds:
In 2001 several families with very diverse backgrounds joined together to open the doors to MCC. After over seven years, MCC continues to be run by following principles:
Be welcoming to both non-Muslims as well as all Muslims regardless of sect or school of thought
Adhere to by-laws which require annual elections and allow equal participation by men and women
Implement core values such as justice, respect, peace, openness, tolerance, timeliness, and accountability
Set English as MCC's official language
Help unite the community by their faith
After renting for several years and eventually being unable to afford the rent increase, alhumdulillah, MCC was able to purchase over 5 acres of land in the beautiful area of Santa Luz, adjacent to Rancho Santa Fe and Fairbanks Ranch. Inshallah, the new center already under construction, will be approximately 10,000 square feet. It will hold a main prayer hall, classrooms for the weekend school, office, and break room. Currently, MCC is located in a temporary facility.
The area of Santa Luz encompasses the elegant design of Andalucian architecture which of course was influenced by the Moors of Southern Spain. This fits in nicely for the design of the new MCC Islamic Center.
The center has wide support from Muslims and non-Muslims alike. At the Groundbreaking Ceremony held in August, 2009, Congressman Brian Bilbray, agents from the State Department and Federal Bureau of Investigations, Bishop Olsen from the Moorman church just a stone's throw away from the center, and Dr. Sulayman S. Nyang were all in attendance.
The building of the new center will cost approximately $5.5M. Alhumdulillah, the community has been able to raise about $4.8M from local donations as well as a shariah compliant loan. This leaves MCC with a shortfall of about $700,000.
MCC has reached some big milestones, however, it is in great need of additional funding. To learn more about MCC, please visit www.gsdmcc.org. If you would like to help support this project, please find the information you need below.
