AMT Launches Voter Registration Campaign on Eid
Washington , DC : The American Muslim Taskforce on Civil Rights and Elections (AMT), a coalition of major Muslim American organizations, has launched a voter registration campaign commencing on Eid and continuing till the Nov2.
AMT is an umbrella organization that includes American Muslim Alliance (AMA), American Muslims for Palestine (AMP), Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR), Islamic Circle of North America (ICNA), Muslim Alliance in North America (MANA), Muslim American Society-Freedom Foundation (MAS-FF), Muslim Legal Fund of America (MLFA), Muslim Student Association-National (MSA-N), Muslim Ummah of North America ( MUNA), National Association of Imams (NAIF) and United Muslims of America (UMA). Its observer organizations include American Muslims for Civic Engagement (AMCE), Islamic Educational Council of Orange County (IECOC), the Islamic Society of North America (ISNA), and Muslim Public Affairs Council (MPAC).
Effective voting is a key component of AMT's strategy to combat rapidly growing Islamophobia in the United States. The AMT had spearheaded the highest Muslim voter turnout in 2008.
In its November 07, 2008, the Newsweek had reported that in terms of the percentage of the eligible voters, the Muslim voter turnout in 2008 was the highest in the history of the Unites States: "The American Muslim Task Force on Civil Rights and Elections released a poll today of over 600 Muslims from more than 10 states, including Florida and Pennsylvania, and it revealed that .... 95 percent of Muslims polled cast a ballot in this year's presidential election - the highest turnout in a US election ever-and 14 percent of those were first-time voters."
The AMT is urging every Muslim activist, every mosque, and every Muslim organization to help register additional Muslim voters and ensure yet another historic turnout on Nov 2, 2010.
