A Summer Night for Civil Rights on June 23
Anaheim, CA: CAIR-Greater Los Angeles Area office is excited to feature popular spoken word artist Amir Sulaiman at " A Summer Night for Civil Rights " on Saturday, June 23, in Redondo Beach.
Amir is an accomplished poet, activist, recording artist and a two-time featured poet on HBO Def Poetry Jam. A native of Rochester, New York, he began writing poetry at the age of 12.
Hip-hop mogul Russell Simmons refers to Amir as "blessed" and Abiodun of The Last Poets, a group of artists that formed in the 60s and drew its inspiration from Malcolm X, calls Amir "the voice of this generation." The ACLU, Amnesty International and Jesse Jackson's Rainbow/PUSH Coalition are some of the national organizations that have used Amir's talent to bring life to various social justice and art campaigns.
Amir's album Like a Thief In The Night was released to critical acclaim in 2007. He also served as host and performer on the national "Breed Love Odyssey Tour" with Mos Def and Talib Kweli.
Amir's published works include a book of poetry, Words of Love, Life, and Death. Amir is currently on tour for his third album and second major release album entitled "Meccan Openings."
Amir will be joined by stand-up comedian Dean Obeidallah and hip-hop artist Omar Offendum on June 23.
