COPAA on Current Political Situation in Pakistan
A press release issued by the Council of Pakistan American Affairs (COPAA) on August 22 states:
On behalf of the Pakistani community residing in United States of America, we would like to express our deep concern about the current situation in Pakistan.
We have been following with deep interest the two protest marches in Islamabad, Pakistan led by Mr Imran Khan and Dr Tahir-ul-Qadri. We support the democratic right of the Pakistani citizens to peaceful assembly and protest, and support the genuine demands for accountability of the public officers. We also feel that it is extremely important that the electoral process for public offices be transparent and fair to ensure the proper representation of the citizens. However, we would not, in any circumstance, favor or support any unconstitutional step taken by any force, civilian or military, to bring down the elected government or take control of the governing power from the elected civilian authorities. In fact, we are opposed to Martial Law or military government in any form or shape. We hope the ruling party and the protesting opposition parties can engage in meaningful dialogue and resolve the crisis in a democratic manner as allowed by the Constitution of Pakistan. Our support and prayers remain with the people of Pakistan.
