Washington DC Internship Program for Muslim American Students
The Center for Global Understanding (CFGU) is a non-profit civic and educational organization designed to cultivate the next generation of American leaders through its Washington DC Internship program. CFGU along with its partner, The Washington Center (TWC), offer scholarships to Muslim American college students to spend a summer interning in Washington DC. The program is endorsed by Congressmen Keith Ellison and Andre Carson.
This is a unique opportunity to learn about our institutions of democracy while gaining leadership skills and participate in civic engagement.
This comprehensive program has four components:
- A 10-week long internship in mainstream organizations based on student’s interest and passion. Our students have interned at the White House, Department of the Interior, USAID, Think Tanks, FDA, Veteran Hospital and Library of Congress.
- Academic classes for undergraduate students. The course credit may apply towards your undergraduate degree depending on the college and if they are affiliated with TWC.
- Our students stay in dorms or an apartment setting during their stay in Washington DC.
- Our flagship Public Affairs Series provides an opportunity to meet and network with leaders in an informal setting. Past events have included small-group meetings at Microsoft, eBay, USAID, The White House, and the Offices of Senator Harry Reid, Rep. André Carson, and Rep. Keith Ellison. Participants have also had the opportunity to network informally with young Muslim American professionals.
Some of the 55 alumni who participated in the program have come back to DC after completion of their degrees to work to continue their careers in civil service. Fatimeh Shamseddine returned to the nation’s capitol to intern at the White House and eventually getting a job as the Special Assistant to the Director of the White House Fellows Program. Other alumni, such as Moshtayeen Ahmad, also from Florida, has interned for the State Department in Slovakia and the Department of Commerce; Faisal Hassan from Maryland obtained a job with the Meridian International Center; and Firdaus Arastu from New York recently started working with the Aspen Institute.
