CAIR-LA Welcomes Resolution Declaring July LA Muslim Heritage Month The Council on American-Islamic Relations Greater Los Angeles Area office congratulated the City of Los Angeles on Wednesday June 18 for upholding pluralism by unanimously passing a resolution that recognizes the Los Angeles Muslim community and its contributions to the American fabric. City Councilman Curren D. Price Jr. (9th District) and Bob Blumenfield (3rd District) sponsored the resolution, which was presented at a Los Angeles City Council Meeting. “This historic day is a testament to the fact that our community is not only growing in numbers, but is a thriving part of this great city and has made significant contributions in numerous fields,” said Haroon Manjlai, public affairs coordinator, who attended the City Council hearing. “We are especially thankful to Councilmembers Price and Blumenfield for proposing and championing this resolution, and applaud the council for passing it unanimously. We look forward to honoring the Muslims who have enriched Los Angeles, while inspiring the next generation to do the same.” In recognizing the positive influences American Muslim community members and organizations have had across many fields and institutions in Los Angeles, the resolution declares the month of July, 2014 as Los Angeles Muslim Heritage Month. The month will promote and encourage awareness of the significant contributions made by the city’s Muslim population in culture, social services, education, medicine, politics, business, technology, and the arts. In addition, the resolution acknowledges America’s flourishing Muslim population especially in California, which is home to the largest concentration of Muslims in the United States. A majority of the Muslim population resides in Southern California. Najee Ali of Project Islamic HOPE, a faith-based organization, worked with Councilmember Price’s office to get this resolution introduced. "It's a historic day for the LA Muslim community as we continue to move into the mainstream of civic life in our city,” said Ali. “We look forward to sharing the best of Islam and our various cultural traditions with our fellow Angelenos. I want to thank Councilmember Price for championing the cause, and to the rest of the council for their support." Los Angeles is one of the most ethnically rich and diverse cities in the United States, with more than 100 religious groups and approximately 86 different languages that are spoken.
