Pakistani Honored by City of Long Beach

The field of Audit, especially Internal Audit, is considered by many to be arcane and obscure. However, the role that auditors play in revealing fraud and financial wrongdoing by businesses and governments, cannot be underestimated.

The internal audit field is highly technical requiring many years of study and qualification by taking a standardized national examination accompanied by several years of work experience. The leading organization in the field of Internal Audit is the Institute of Internal Auditors (IIA) which is a global organization with chapters in almost every country in the world.

The IIA has 180,000 members located in 190 countries and offers several professional designations. It operates via a network of local chapters that organize their own training, member services and networking events. In the Los Angeles area the Beach Cities Chapter has been one of the most successful chapters for the past ten years,. Headed for the past three years by Sher Shah CPA (Controller of the Port of Los Angeles) the local chapter has exceeded all measures by which the Chapters are evaluated, earning it the status of “Platinum” Member.

To recognize the remarkable achievement of the Beach Cities Chapter of the IIA, and to celebrate the Internal Audit Awareness Month, the City of Long Beach issued a proclamation honoring the Chapter and its President, Pakistani-American Sher Shah for his leadership. The ceremony took place on Tuesday, July 5 th, 2016 at the Council Chambers of the City of Long Beach.

The Mayor of Long Beach, Dr Robert Garcia, proclaimed May 2016 as the International Internal Audit Awareness Month and invited Mr Shah to address the City Council and the attendees. Mr Shah thanked the City of Long Beach for the recognition granted to the IIA Beach Cities Chapter. Following Mr Shah’s speech, the City Auditor Laura Doud, and her staff members Damon Melfi and Kristen Clement, joined Mr Shah to receive the Proclamation from the Mayor.
