Professor Rafiq Mahmood, Former Education Counsellor in Washington, Passes away
Professor Rafiq Mahmood, former Head of the English Department at Government College, Lahore, diplomat, and Editor of the scholarly journal Explorations as well as many textbooks, passed away in Lahore on 19th December, 2016 after a brief illness. The funeral prayers, offered on 20th December at the main Jamia Masjid, DHA, Phase 1, were attended by many educators and citizens.
Professor Rafiq Mahmood served as Education Counsellor (mid-1970s) at the Pakistan Embassy in Washington, DC. During his stay in the country, he actively participated in community events in the US to help the community in various ways.
An alumnus of the University of the Punjab and the University of Oxford, Professor Rafiq Mahmood was a learned man and a very popular teacher throughout his working life. He was a deeply committed educationist, who served the cause of proper education from the 1950s through 1980s, his particular focus in all his endeavours being the well-being of the Pakistani people. He is survived by his wife Mrs. Rafiq Mahmood, son Zahid Mahmood, daughter-in-law Salma Mahmood, and two grandchildren. His beloved memory is cherished by his family, for whom he was a caring presence. His colleagues and thousands of his former students across the country also mourn his passing.
