CAIR-CA Thanks State AG Nominee Becerra for Statement Rejecting Muslim ‘Registry’
Anaheim, CA: The California chapter of the Council on American-Islamic-Relations (CAIR-CA), the nation's largest Muslim civil rights and advocacy organization, has applauded Representative Xavier Becerra’s statement rejecting a proposed “registry” for Muslim immigrants.
In a letter released over the weekend, Becerra wrote in part:
"Disturbing statements uttered during the recent Presidential campaign have given rise to legitimate fears that the new federal administration might seek to adopt policies that would discriminate against people based on factors such as their religious belief. Any such policies would be antithetical to the deepest constitutional values and traditions of this nation — a nation founded in part by men and women fleeing religious persecution."
In a statement, CAIR-LA Executive Director Hussam Ayloush said:
“Representative Becerra’s statement reflects the true values of leadership in California. His declaration signals support for the religious liberties of all Californians, including Muslims. The California Muslim community appreciates Rep. Becerra’s commitment to preserving civil rights and upholding the principles of the Constitution.”
