Hasan Minjaj Netflix Special to Debut on May 23rd
By Ras H. Siddiqui
Daily Show Correspondent Hasan Minhaj who recently lit up the White House Correspondents’ Dinner in Washington, should be elated in more ways than one. Not only is his “Homecoming King” Netflix special going to debut on May 23rd but after his convincing performance at the event that brings Washington’s top journalists together (He “Killed It” according to some young people), he has been honored by the City of New York with a Resolution which declared “Hasan Minhaj Day on May 10, 2017. New York City Mayor Bill de Blasio attributed this honor to Hasan for his promotion of the immigrant narrative and inclusiveness in our country.
Hasan’s proud parents hail from Aligarh, India and reside in the Sacramento, California area where they have been prominent members of the South Asian and Muslim community. Hasan grew up in this area, (mostly in the college town of Davis, to be more precise) and his “Homecoming King” show derives a great deal of material from his personal experiences, as he journeyed through life as a brown kid, an Indian-American Muslim, growing up in post -9/11 America. Some viewer discretion is advised for content and strong language.
