Lahore Road Named after Colonel (Retd.) Amjad Sayed
To salute the legacy and contributions of veteran Pakistan Movement activist Colonel (Retd.) Amjad Hussain Sayed, a road in his honor was named in mid-April in Muslim Town, Lahore. This locality was originally founded by his Sayed family elders nearly a century ago.
It may be recalled that, during his teens when he was a student leader at Islamia College, Lahore – the hub of Muslim nationhood – he was picked by Allama Iqbal as a delegate to the transformative October 1937 Lucknow Session of the Muslim League, spearheaded by Quaid-i-Azam, which laid the foundations of the Pakistan Movement. Col ® Amjad Hussain Sayed also was an active participant in the March 23, 1940 Muslim League Session in Lahore, wherein the Pakistan Resolution was passed and he is visible in the only video recording made of the epochal event.
During the 1950’s, when Col. Amjad served as Pakistan’s top military representative in Jakarta, Indonesia, he was conferred by President Sukarno with Indonesia’s highest award for his role in cementing Pak-Indonesia amity at a time when Pandit Nehru’s influence was particularly strong in the aftermath of the 1955 Bandung Conference.
Col. Amjad peacefully passed away on June 19, 2017. Until the end, he remained an inspiring presence and a dauntless voice projecting the vision of Quaid-i-Azam’s Pakistan. He was the father of one of Pakistan Link’s leading columnists, Mowahid Hussain Shah.
