Pakistani-American Architect among Winners of Climate Contests!

In the summer of 2017, Climate CoLab opened seven contests on key challenges in addressing climate change, including reducing emissions in transportation, implementing a price on carbon, preparing for climate impacts, and others. Nearly 300 proposals were submitted, and evaluated by expert judges, who then selected 95 semi-finalists.
Authors had a chance to revise their proposals with the judges’ feedback before entering a second round of evaluation, where 37 proposals were selected as finalists, and opened for a public vote. In 2017 and early 2018, the Climate CoLab community grew to over 100,000 members, who cast over 10,000 votes to select the contests’ Popular Choice winners. 17 Winners were subsequently selected by the judges and global community!
The Judges’ Choice Award and Popular Choice Award Winners will be invited to MIT in October to participate as part of HUBweek, a week-long “festival of the future” in the heart of Boston. The $10,000 Grand Prize winner will be announced at those events.
The17 winners for 7 contest areas included Javed Sultan, a Pakistani-American architect and civil engineer, who won the award (Judges’ choice) in two of the contests, “Buildings” and “Adaptation”. The “Buildings” award acknowledged his net-zero building in Africa that is off the grid, and is naturally heated, even in sub-zero temperatures, with affordable, recyclable and renewable energy sources. His “Adaptation” award was based on how poor countries can adapt and fight climate change with local manpower and resources.
