Third International Conference on Arabs’ and Muslims’ History of Sciences

The College of Arts and Sciences of the University of Sharjah, United Arab Emirates organized a three-day landmark event, “Third International Conference on Arabs’ and Muslims’ History of Sciences”, from 5-7 December 2017 under the theme “The Arabic & Islamic Scientific Heritage: Innovation, Acculturation, and Coexistence” (http://www.sharjah.ac.ae/ichs17).
The conference was held under the patronage of His Highness, ShaykhDr Sultan Bin Mohamed Alqassmi, Member of the Supreme Council of the United Arab Emirates, Ruler of Sharjah and President of the University of Sharjah. Dr Sultan has completed a PhD with distinction in History at Exeter University in 1985, and another in the Political Geography of the Gulf at Durham University in 1999.
It will be recalled that the “First International Conference on Arabs' and Muslims' History of Sciences”, was held during 24-27 March 2008 with the theme, “Arabs' and Muslims' Scientific Contributions to Humanity”. The very first event had over eight hundred delegates from thirty-six countries with over three hundred presentations. The “Second International Conference on Arabs' and Muslims' History of Sciences” was held during 8-11 December 2014 with the theme, “The impact of early Arab and Muslim scholars on recent scientific and technological advances”. The second event had over four hundred participants from forty-two countries. Both the events had attracted numerous historians of science. The success of the two events lead to the creation of the “Sharjah International Foundation for the History of Muslim and Arab Sciences (SIFHAMS, https://sifhams.sharjah.ac.ae/)” in January 2015.
The conference offered valuable opportunities for knowledge exchange, networking and learning about the Arabs and Muslims scientific and scholarly heritage and latest findings and discoveries in the field. The conference focused on the following themes:
1. Innovative Culture and its impact in building educational community of the Islamic Civilization.
2. Scientific Research in Islamic Civilization.
3. Reviving the Arabic and Islamic Heritage and connecting it with modern scholarly activities.
4. History of Medicine and Health Sciences in Arabic and Islamic Civilizations.
5. Environmental Sciences in Islamic Thought.
6. Architectural Design and Engineering in Arabic and Islamic Civilizations.
7. Agricultural and irrigation in Arabic and Islamic Civilizations.
8. Basic Sciences and Astronomical discoveries in Arabic and Islamic Civilizations.
9. The evolvement of the science of encryption in early Arab and Muslim Scholars.
10. Islamic and Arabic heritage and its role in promoting free dialogue and the coexistence of civilizations.
The three-day event examined and discussed more than 150 scientific papers, delivered by notable experts from over twenty countries. During the conference, the attendees watched a film about the history of the conference and the objectives it is seeking to achieve. An exhibition of rare manuscripts, archeological artifacts, and valuable references and books from the UAE was also held.
The University of Sharjah was established as a non-profit institution for higher education in October 1997. The University is comprised of fourteen colleges catering to over fourteen thousand students with a faculty of about six hundred. The University currently offers a total of eighty-five academic degree programs including fifty bachelor degrees, seventeen master’s degrees, seven PhD degrees, one graduate and ten associate diploma degrees.
