Sunni-Shia Islamic Thought Symposiumat the University of California, Irvine
Shura Council's Chairman Dr Ahmed Soboh and former Chairman DrMuzammil Siddiqi were among the 250-strong audience that attended the recent Sunni-Shia Islamic Thought Symposiumat the University of California, Irvine.
The panel of speakers included DrSayyid M. Syeed (ISNA), DrLiyakatTakim (McMaster University), DrNajeebaSyeed (Claremont School of Theology) and Dr Sayed Moustafa al-Qazwini (Shia Muslim Council). The event was moderated by DrHasnainWalji (United Global Initiative) and Dr Sana Tayyen (University of Redlands).
The objective of the Symposium was to bring together scholars and leaders to promote understanding between Sunni and Shia Muslims by sharing historical, theological, legal, and other similarities and differences between the communities. With this understanding, the Muslim community can work towards institutionalizing dialogue that is sustainable and relevant to Muslims in North America.
Shura Chairman, Dr Ahmed Soboh gave the closing remarks focusing on methods to create harmony that included visiting masjids and praying together.
