Mrs Noor Jehan Mohamadi Passes away
The Muslim community of Southern California is rocked again within a week by the death of another senior and respected member of the community who had been deeply involved in providing religious education to our younger generation, Mrs Noor Jehan Mohamadi, who passed away on Tuesday, February 12, 2019, at her home in Diamond Bar, California. She was 92 years old.
Inna lillahi wa inna ilayhi raji’oon
May Allah rest her soul in eternal peace in Jannatul Firdaus and give her family the fortitude and courage to bear this monumental loss. My heartfelt condolences and sincere prayers are with the entire family during this most difficult time in their life.
Mrs Mohamadi was born to an educated family in Hyderabad, India. Her father, Judge Dawood Khan Soofi, was a barrister-at-law from Lincoln’s Inn, London. Her mother, Begum Pasha Soofi, was the first Muslim woman to complete her post-graduate studies in India: she graduated from Aligarh Muslim University. Her family valued education deeply, something which Mrs Mohamadi carried forward throughout her life and a value which she inculcated in her children and grandchildren as well. After receiving her early Islamic education at home, Mrs Mohamadi completed her Senior Cambridge studies from Mahbubia Girls School in Hyderabad. Thereafter, she completed her undergraduate studies from Aligarh Muslim University, and then completed her post-graduate dissertation in Indian-Muslim history from Karachi University.
She married Khursheed Ahmad Mahmadi in 1949, and soon thereafter they both migrated from Hyderabad, India, to Karachi, Pakistan. She taught for over 25 years at the well-known PECHS Girls School in Karachi.
Mrs Mohamadi was mother to three children: Nayyer Bawahab, Khalid Mohammadi, and Rashed Mohammadi.
In addition to her three children, she was blessed with ten grandchildren, and seven great-grandchildren.
Both Mr and Mrs Mohamadi migrated from Pakistan to America in 1982 to live with their son, Rashed Mohammadi. Once in the United States, Mrs Mohamadi became deeply involved in the Muslim community of greater San Gabriel Valley. Her background in teaching was a special asset to the nascent Muslim community. Thus, in 1982, the area Muslims approached her to assist in the establishment of an Islamic school. She founded the Weekend Islamic School at the Islamic Center of San Gabriel Valley (ICSGV). To this day, the school - still thriving - has taught more than a thousand students over several generations.
While volunteering at ICSGV, she decided to further her graduate studies by enrolling in the master’s program in education at the California State Polytechnic University, Pomona. There, she completed her dissertation on the comparative roles of teachers in Western and Eastern societies.
Mrs Mohamadi played an active role in community affairs and served selflessly. May Allah (SWT) reward her for the services she provided to the community. May Allah (SWT) bless her with Jannat al-Firdaus, overlook all her shortcomings, grant her ease in her grave and ease on the Day of Judgment, and grant her the intercession of our Beloved Prophet (PBUH). Ameen.
Funeral prayers for Mrs Mohamadi were held at the Islamic Center of San Gabriel Valley on Friday, February 15, 2019 and she was laid to rest in the Live Oak Memorial Park, Monrovia, CA.
May her soul rest in peace. (Ameen)
