Beware of Scammers Using COVID-19 to Trick Customers

Southern California Edison reminds customers to stay aware and not fall victim to scammers taking advantage of the public during the COVID-19 outbreak .
During the pandemic, con artists and impostors are targeting unsuspecting customers and the public in an attempt to steal their money, their personal information, or both.
The World Health Organization warns the public not to fall for phishing emails, texts and social media posts requesting personal information or selling phony products sent by scammers.
“It’s disheartening that there are people deliberately targeting our customers and the general public during this COVID-19 crisis,” said Kari Gardner, SCE senior manager of Consumer Affairs. “People need to know about these scams and how to recognize them so they can protect themselves and their families.”
The most common utility phone scam involves scammers calling customers and threatening to turn off their electricity unless they make an immediate payment via a prepaid cash card. Call SCE’s customer service call center (1-800-655-4555) or go to your online account to check your billing information.
SCE is temporarily suspending service disconnections for nonpayment and waiving late fees by request during the current COVID-19 emergency restrictions . For more information, visit sce.com/billhelp .
