The COVID-19 pandemic continues to rage out of control, with nearly 3,000 deaths per day projected in January. As the outlook is grim, despite a COVID vaccine arriving any day (for those who get high priority), taking COVID-19 prevention measures has never been more important. In a new virtual Q&A on the future of health care at Milken Institute with Norah O'Donnell of ABC News, Dr Anthony Fauci, the nation's leading infectious disease expert, revealed where and how the virus is being unexpectedly spread. "The one thing we're all aware of that there certainly is COVID-19 fatigue," Fauci admitted. "People are worn out of being shut down and not allowed to do the things that they really would enjoy doing, particularly during the holiday season. But you don't have to shut down the entire country or shut down the economy. You can do some things that would allow you to keep the children in school, to keep shops and commercial venues open."
However, he added that "you don't want to do things that are asking for trouble."
"Those are the things that we know so well, the congregating in crowded places with no masks such as in bars, and parties that are indoor with no good ventilation, those are the things that drive it," he continued.
However, the primary method of spreading the virus isn't from stranger-to-stranger.
"In addition, what we're seeing now, which was a bit unexpected, but true is that even modest size gatherings of family and friends in a home with obviously the indoor constraints of not getting good ventilation, we're starting to see infections that are reemerging from what otherwise seemed like benign settings, namely, a typical gathering of 10 or so people in a social setting," he revealed. "Gotta be very careful about that now over the next few weeks."
This is why, for the first time in more than 30 years, Fauci isn't going to be spending the Christmas holidays with his three daughters.
Spend Christmas only with Those You Shelter with
Later on in the interview, Fauci revealed that current projection models are based on the assumption that people are going to be traveling and spending time with family and friends outside of their household. However, "we don't need to accept" it and "can change the assumptions that are put into the model."
"We can do things like, although it is painful, inconvenient and sad, we can double down on blunting some of that by avoiding some of the things as, as warm and pleasant as they are during the holiday season, to do much less of that in trying to keep the gatherings to people within the immediate household," he stated.
If you do invite other people into your home, "be very careful" he warned. "Hopefully they may have been tested, so you know that very recently there were negative, or they have their own bubble where they're very, very careful in themselves protecting themselves so that when you get together is much less of a risk in someone who just gets from an airport or a train station, gets in an Uber, but comes to your house, sits down. And then you have a social setting. You have no idea who they were exposed to. Those are the things you avoid."

Dr Anthony Fauci, the leading infectious disease expert in the US and invaluable leader amid the coronavirus epidemic, is officially joining the Biden Administration when President-elect Joe Biden takes office in January. Biden announced the news yesterday, stating that he asked Dr. Fauci to become his chief medical adviser. He, of course, said “yes.”
After months of basically being shut out of the Trump Administration’s response to the coronavirus pandemic despite being a literal expert on infectious diseases, how they spread, and how to mitigate them.
“Oh, absolutely. I said yes right on the spot,” Fauci told TODAY when asked if he’d taken the role.
Ron Klain, Biden’s incoming White House chief of staff, praised Fauci in a tweet.
“There are few public servants in our history who have served as long and as well and with as much distinction at (sic) Dr. Tony Fauci. It will be a great honor to work with him again,” he wrote.
Fauci, the director of the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases, was sidelined by President Donald Trump this year because he wasn’t supportive of Dr Fauci’s messaging regarding the importance of wearing masks, social distancing, and preventing large-scale gatherings.
