Covid-19 and the Unsung Muslim Heroes
By Tahir Ali
Worcester: The Covid-19 pandemic has taken the nation and the world in its grip. It has taken its toll on human lives, social behavior and a sizable chunk of the economy. In the midst of the greatly disturbing situation, however, there are concerned and passionate people who have taken it upon themselves to help out as much as they can. The Muslim community belonging to the Islamic Centers in Worcester and other parts of the State have been doing their part - like donating money and distributing free food to the needy regardless of their faith and background – to mitigate their suffering.
Mohamad El-Rafaei, trustee of the Islamic Society of Greater Worcester (ISGW), agreed that the desire to help others manifests not only at the community level, but also at an individual level.
Amir Mohammad, who owns the 7 Eleven convenient store in Worcester located on Blackstone River Road, hosted a "Customer Appreciation Day," to distribute food and groceries to any one in need. "With people losing their jobs and others struggling with their jobs, I feel it is my duty to help out." Amir remarked,"This way I am also honoring my late father, Mustafa Amro Mohammad -[sadqa-e-Jaria] "
The good deed made it to the evening news reported by Spectrum TV. Photo above shows Amir being interviewed by Joe Paskalis of Spectrum News.
