MPAC Calls on Muslim Communities to Protect Houses of Worship
Washington, DC: The Muslim Public Affairs Council (MPAC) is deeply saddened and alarmed by the recent mob violence targeting the Christian religious minority community in Pakistan. MPAC firmly upholds Islamic values of respect and deference for people of all faiths and beliefs.
Angry mobs, alleging that members of the minority community desecrated the Qur’an, attacked a dozen churches and nearly two dozen homes of Christians. MPAC stands in solidarity with the victims and their families affected by these heinous acts of violence. Our prayers and support are with them during this difficult time.
We are encouraged by the Pakistani government’s efforts to arrest 120+ of the perpetrators, and hope that they will be held accountable to the fullest extent of the law to ensure the safety and security of all individuals and their places of worship, which are sacred spaces that are to be respected and protected.
It is important to emphasize that Islam, as a religion of peace, does not condone or promote violence. The actions of a few individuals do not represent an entire Muslim community. MPAC urges all individuals and communities to condemn hatred, bigotry, violence, and discrimination, and instead foster tolerance, respect, and compassion.
As an organization committed to promoting positive Muslim engagement and countering anti-Muslim animus, MPAC continues to work tirelessly to build bridges of understanding between Muslims and non-Muslims. We believe that through education, dialogue, and mutual respect, we can foster a more inclusive and equitable society.
MPAC calls upon faith and global leaders to unite in condemning these attacks and work together to protect places of worship, ensuring the safety of all individuals, regardless of their faith.
