‘Democracy in Debt: Sri Lanka Beyond the Headlines’ to be Screened in Islamabad and Karachi

Watching events in Bangladesh feels relevant to Pakistani journalist Beena Sarwar’s new documentary ‘Democracy in Debt: Sri Lanka Beyond the Headlines’ . The 25-minute film, supported by the Pulitzer Center delves into Sri Lanka’s socio-political landscape, exploring the impact of the 2022 economic crisis through the voices of villagers, policymakers, academics, and political representatives.
The reputed think tank Factum hosted a screening of the film at a cinema in Colombo last month just before the presidential elections were announced, to be held on 21 September. A prominent analyst suggested showing it to all the presidential candidates. The activist group, Good Governance Yaya also held a screening and a discussion last Wednesday in Colombo, and several European guests and locals, eminent Pakistani artists and intellectuals including producer and writer Moneeza Hashmi , artist Naazish Ataullah , and architect Fauzia Qureshi , attended an earlier screening at Weligama (23 July). Renowned artist and educator Salima Hashmi , also a Sapan advisor, introduced the film.
Pakistan’s largest television channel Geo TV broadcast the film last Saturday with Urdu subtitles and is a fully translated version is under-production.
The documentary will be screened in Islamabad at the Black Hole (Friday 9 August) , T2F, Karachi ( Saturday 10 August), and Alhamra Adbi Baithak, Lahore ( Thursday 15 Aug). |
