Ambassador Masood Khan graciously hosted a delightful gathering on Friday, June 14, 2024, for the International Correspondents Committee (ICC) and members of the National Press Club. The event embraced a diverse group of journalists from various news outlets, including esteemed ICC members from Bangladesh, India, and Sri Lanka.
With his engaging charm and quick wit, the Ambassador took the time to personally connect with each member, displaying genuine interest in their backgrounds and passions. During his introduction, Ambassador Masood Khan humbly shared his fascinating journey, highlighting his tenure as Pakistan's ambassador to China.
The evening had a delightful twist when Ambassador Masood Khan, who hails from the beautiful region of Azad Kashmir on the Pakistani side, met with an Indian journalist representing the Indian side of Kashmir. Rather than an unpleasant confrontation, a charming and unexpected moment unfolded as the Ambassador playfully challenged Khushboo to say a few words in Chinese, alluding to her travels in China. To everyone's surprise, Ambassador Masood Khan showcased his linguistic prowess by effortlessly speaking a few sentences in Mandarin. It was a truly enjoyable exchange that showcased their friendly camaraderie.
Throughout the gathering, the Ambassador delighted the attendees with captivating historical anecdotes about Pakistan House, his official residence nestled graciously on S Street NW. Situated in a historic neighborhood, this residence rests just across from the former Textile Museum, now serving as the home to the renowned Amazon founder, Jeff Bezos. Additionally, nearby lies the enchanting Woodrow Wilson House, a true treasure for both history enthusiasts and curious visitors.
In response to an inquiry by an ICC member about the extraordinary artwork adorning the walls of this magnificent residence, Ambassador Masood Khan revealed his deep knowledge and passion for the renowned Pakistani artist, Abdur Rehman Chugtai. Chugtai's iconic artistic style, influenced by Mughal art, miniature painting, and Islamic art, has left an indelible mark on the art world. The discussion expanded to include the work of Syed Sadequain Ahmed Naqvi, whose masterpieces beautifully capture the essence of classical literature from poets like Ghalib, Iqbal, and Faiz.
As the Ambassador passionately described these precious artworks, my imagination soared back in time to the enchanting Shalimar Gardens, conjuring memories of riding alongside my father on Lahore's bustling Mall Road. I vividly recalled passing by iconic landmarks and the anticipation of celebrating Eid in the vast expanses of Badami Bagh, just across the road from the historic Lahore Fort. In that magical moment, I was captivated by the sight of two revered souls comfortably seated on a plush sofa across the room. It was as if Faiz Ahmad Faiz and Mehdi Hassan themselves were serenading us and beckoning other fellow ICC members, filling the air with joy on that delightful Friday evening in the heart of diplomatic Washington.

چلے بھی آؤ کے گلشن کا کاروبار چلے
Translation:
The wind of the new spring brings color to the flowers
Come, let us go, for the business of the garden awaits
Reflecting on the memorable dinner event, one ICC member expressed, “This was a truly marvelous evening—an off-the-record conversation with a thoughtful and approachable ambassador. Not to mention the outstanding staff and the incredible food.”
