'The Chronicles of Umro Ayyar' Brings Pakistani Folklore to Cannes

The 77th Cannes Film Festival has become a landmark event for the Pakistani film industry, marking its historic entry onto the global stage. The renowned Marché du Film is screening  The Chronicles of Umro Ayyar , making it the first ever Pakistani 3D animated feature film to screen on the online platform at the prestigious film festival.

According to a press release, the film, which is based on traditional folklore, showcases the country's rich cultural heritage through cutting-edge animation. This momentous occasion follows the Marché preview screening of the eagerly awaited  The Glassworker , further propelling Pakistan's cinematic presence.

Produced by Karachi-based Ingenuity Productions, the film is described on IMDb as an adventure fantasy inspired by the epic tale of  Tilism-e-Hoshruba . It recounts the thrilling adventures of the legendary trickster hero Umro Ayyar as he traverses time and magical realms.

Beneath its fantastical surface,  The Chronicles of Umro Ayyar  explores deeper themes that resonate with audiences of all ages. The story highlights the quest for true connection and the triumph over selfishness, as Umro Ayyar’s journey emphasizes the power of forging bonds that transcend racial, gender, class, age, and personality differences.

Ingenuity Productions expressed their excitement on their official social media account, stating, “Our film's presence at the Cannes Film Market promises to captivate audiences, showcasing the rich storytelling and cinematic prowess emerging from Pakistan.”

“We're confident that the film's stunning visuals and story will captivate audiences worldwide,” said Haris Basharat, Ingenuity Production’s CEO. In addition to Umro Ayyar, the production house is also developing a 3D animated series titled  Science Voyagers , which follows a curious boy on time-traveling adventures to meet history's scientific greats.

The company's portfolio further includes two 2D animated series:  Aria and the Magic Jungle , focusing on environmental awareness, and  Yolki and Hatch , centered around childhood development. The inclusion of  The Chronicles of Umro Ayyar  and other projects at Cannes underscores the burgeoning talent and innovation within Pakistan's film industry, heralding a new era of recognition and opportunity on an international scale. – The Express Tribune
