New York: On September 26, 2024, Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif of Pakistan held a meeting with Iranian President Dr Masoud Pezeshkian on the sidelines of the 79th session of the United Nations General Assembly. Pezeshkian, Iran’s ninth president, assumed office in July, following the death of Ebrahim Raisi in a helicopter crash in May.
The two leaders reviewed the entire spectrum of bilateral relations and underscored the need to further strengthen their warm neighborly ties and build mutually beneficial cooperation.
Prime Minister Sharif highlighted the importance of enhancing bilateral trade and investment, improving connectivity and cultural ties with Iran.
Reiterating Pakistan’s stance on Palestine, the prime minister called for an immediate humanitarian ceasefire in Gaza and the end of Israeli aggression against Palestine and Lebanon.
Demanding a permanent ceasefire in Gaza, Iranian President Pezeshkian stated the Israeli attacks on the beleaguered Palestinians in Gaza are “crimes against humanity.”
During the meeting, the two leaders reaffirmed their countries’ longtime mutual support, and both look forward to increased future opportunities for further strengthening this important partnership.
Sharing a 565-mile border, the two Islamic countries are both members of the Shanghai Corporation Organization and are committed to working together on counterterrorism and security issues. The two neighbors also enjoy a mutually beneficial trade relationship.
