An Evening of Purpose and Hope: Omer-e-Rawan Foundation’s Washington DC Fundraising Dinner

By M. Nasser Akhtar

On a perfect summer afternoon in the nation’s capital, with a gentle balance of sunshine and shade beneath lightly overcast skies, supporters of the Omer-e-Rawan Foundation gathered at Selva DC, a vibrant Latin-inspired restaurant located just steps from the White House, for an evening dedicated to a cause that transcends borders, professions, and generations.

The event brought together a diverse and distinguished audience representing a broad spectrum of ages, backgrounds, professions, and geographies. Business leaders, physicians, healthcare professionals, academics, government officials, technology experts, philanthropists, and community members joined friends and supporters of the Foundation in a shared commitment to improving the lives of children through health and education.

The evening commenced with welcoming remarks from Event Chair Dr Saima Siddiqui, who greeted guests and officially launched the silent auction featuring a collection of remarkable photographic prints. Dr Siddiqui then introduced the evening’s keynote speaker, Ambassador Professor Akbar S. Ahmed, one of Washington’s most respected scholars, diplomats, and public intellectuals, admired by audiences across the United States, the international community, and the global Pakistani diaspora.

In a speech lasting less than ten minutes, Professor Ahmed delivered a masterclass in scholarship and perspective. Drawing upon history, faith, culture, and geopolitics, he skillfully connected the mission of the Omer-e-Rawan Foundation to broader themes shaping both Pakistan and the world. His remarks emphasized the central importance of ilm—the pursuit of knowledge—in the Islamic tradition, reflected on the influence of the military institution in which the Foundation’s founder served with distinction, and highlighted Pakistan’s historic and future role as a catalyst in shaping emerging global realities.

Though concise, his four-point address held a remarkable depth of insight, providing both intellectual context and moral validation for the Foundation’s work.

Following the keynote address, guests viewed a short video presentation introducing Air Marshal (Retired) Aamir Masood, Founder and Chief Executive Officer of the Omer-e-Rawan Foundation.

Air Marshal Masood then took the stage to deliver what many in attendance described as the emotional centerpiece of the evening.

With sincerity, humility, and remarkable strength, he recounted the origins of the Foundation and the profound personal tragedy that inspired its creation—the loss of his beloved son, Omer, a highly accomplished young man whose life ended far too soon. Rather than allowing grief to define him, Air Marshal Masood chose to transform that loss into a mission of service, dedicating himself to ensuring that health-related barriers do not prevent children from achieving their educational potential.

What followed was a compelling presentation of both vision and results.

Through detailed data and carefully documented outcomes, Air Marshal Masood showed how, in less than two years, the Foundation has achieved what many would have considered impossible. He outlined measurable successes in health screening, community engagement, parental participation, and access to care for school-age children. Particularly striking was the dramatic increase in parental participation rates—from approximately 15 percent to over 95 percent in some initiatives — a sign of both community trust and operational effectiveness.

Throughout his presentation, it became clear that Air Marshal Masood has brought the same discipline, leadership, and technical precision to philanthropy that distinguished his decades-long military career. The focus, strategic planning, and relentless pursuit of results that characterized his service as a decorated F-16 fighter pilot, senior commander, and Air Force leader now drive the mission of the Omer-e-Rawan Foundation.

Named in memory of his beloved son, Omer, the Foundation has become far more than a tribute. It has evolved into a growing movement dedicated to providing children with the opportunity to thrive by addressing the physical and mental health challenges that often stand in the way of educational success.

The scale of the challenge is immense. Yet those familiar with Air Marshal Masood’s career understand why so many supporters believe in the Foundation’s ability to succeed. Time and again, he has shown an ability to carry out missions that others viewed as unattainable. Today, he has set his sights on another ambitious goal: helping transform the future of millions of children through early intervention, healthcare access, and educational support.

This is not merely an Omer-e-Rawan Foundation challenge. It is a national challenge with global implications. The responsibility belongs not only to one organization or one individual, but to all who believe that every child deserves an opportunity to reach their full potential.

The response from the community was both inspiring and encouraging.

Supporters traveled from across the Washington metropolitan area and beyond. Sargodhians from various parts of North America joined Aitchisonians, friends, family members, and well-wishers in showing their commitment to the Foundation’s mission. Leaders from business, medicine, healthcare, finance, technology, academia, and government came together not only to celebrate the Foundation’s achievements but also to help sustain and expand its impact.

The evening concluded on a reflective and inspiring note. Air Marshal Masood closed his remarks with a line from Robert Frost’s timeless poem Stopping by Woods on a Snowy Evening:

“But I have promises to keep,

And miles to go before I sleep,

And miles to go before I sleep.”

For the Omer-e-Rawan Foundation, those miles represent the countless children whose futures can still be transformed through timely healthcare, educational opportunity, and compassionate intervention.

Judging by the energy, commitment, and support on display in Washington, DC, the journey is well underway.
