By Atif Raza

KARACHI: One person was killed while 19 others were injured in a low intensity blast outside the country’s largest video CDs market ‘Rainbow Centre’ in Saddar Town on Thursday evening.

According to reports, the low intensity blast hit the pushcarts placed in front of the Centre.

Law enforcement agencies, Bomb Disposal Squad (BDS) and rescuers rushed to the spot following the blast and shifted the wounded bystanders to different hospitals of the city.

Hospital sources said that as many as 18 injured persons were brought to the hospital, while five of them were allowed to go after the provision of first aid.

Police said that investigations were underway and experts from BDS were examining nature of the blast.

Eyewitnesses, when asked to comment, said around five to six men were present at the scene of the incident when unidentified culprits tossed the grenade and managed to flee.

Commercial and non-commercial activities in the city’s downtown were completely suspended following the blast.

Heavy contingents of police and rangers rushed to the spot and cordoned off the area, while the BDS experts and teams of other agencies collected the explosive samples of explosives from the scene of the incident.

A BDU officer told Daily Times on the condition of anonymity that the hand grenade was locally manufactured, adding that initially it was speculated that total weight of the grenade was around 250 to 300 grams.

An eyewitness told Daily Times that unidentified men on motorcycle threw the grenade, which only injured passersby.
