Japan’s nuclear radioactivity reaches Pakistan, says PAEC

ISLAMABAD: Like many other countries, including China, United States, South Korea, UK, Scotland, very small traces of airborne radioactive iodine, believed to have originated form the crisis-hit Japanese Fukushima nuclear power plant, have been detected in Pakistan as well, says a press release issued by the Pakistan Atomic Energy Commission (PAEC) on Friday.

Because of large distances form Japan and air mixing along the path, the radiation reaching Pakistan is extremely diluted.

The amounts of radioactive iodine detected in Pakistan are tiny and billions of times lower than levels that could be of any consequence for public health or environment. Therefore, no precautionary measures of any kind are needed.

“Radioactivity from Japan’s earthquake-hit nuclear power plant has reached Pakistan, but the levels recorded do not pose any danger to people or the environment,” said a Pakistani nuclear scientist, Dr Jamshaid Zaidi.

The detection has been made possible only because of the highly sensitive surveillance systems used for this purpose by Pakistan Atomic Energy Commission. app
