SC summons Balochistan chief secretary over poor law and order

Staff Report

ISLAMABAD: The Supreme Court on Monday expressing its displeasure over the poor law and order situation in the province, summoned Balochistan Chief Secretary Ahmed Baksh Lehri to explain to the court regarding the steps that have been taken by the provincial government to control target killings and improve the deteriorating law and order situation.

The court directed Balochistan Additional Advocate General, Azam Khattak, to inquire about the grievances of those Balochis who have been protesting in front of the Islamabad Press Club for the last many days.

A three-member bench headed by Chief Justice of Pakistan (CJP), Iftikhar Muhammad Chaudhry, was hearing a constitutional petition filed by Balochistan High Court Bar Association (BHCBA) president against the federation and the law enforcement agencies. At the start of the hearing, the CJP inquired from the additional advocate general if any officials of the federal or the provincial governments had visited the protesting Balochis to address their problems. He directed Khattak to pay them a visit inquiring about their grievances. The CJP observed that the law and order situation in Balochistan was worsening day by day, but the government did not seem to be affected by this.
